DIRECT-TO-PLATE
Bookforum is printed on a web offset press, using a 4-color (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) halftone separation process. For full page and spread, text should be no closer than 0.25" to the edge of the cut page (not the bleed). Improperly sized material may be altered at Bookforum’s discretion. Bookforum only accepts digital files for direct-to-plate output. We no longer accept film.
We strongly prefer Adobe InDesign files (must include all necessary fonts; must also include graphics/logos/pictures in TIFF or EPS format at sufficient resolution). We will also accept Illustrator EPS or PDF files.
DESIGN
When supplying photographic material for design purposes, digital images should be at least 300 dpi at 100%. All copy for typesetting can be e-mailed to the New York office. PDF proofs will be e-mailed for approval. Bookforum does not supply color proofs. Bookforum is not responsible for incorrect text knockout and overprint settings in files supplied by advertisers.
COLOR SPECIFICATIONS
Bookforum is printed in CMYK color. We use the Pantone process-color simulator to convert PMS colors to process colors. Bookforum is not responsible for any change of color due to conversion. Additional colors such as metallics and fluorescents are available at Bookforum’s discretion for full-page ads. The charge for additional colors is $900. All images other than 4-color must be supplied in b&w. All full-bleed grays are prone to streaking.
COLOR PROOF
Bookforum can only guarantee color matching when a color proof is provided to the following digital dot proofs: PolaProof, Kodak Approval, Fuji Final Proof. Bookforum will not assume responsibility for color matching to any other type of proof. A digital dot proof is not required for black-and-white ads. Original art will be accepted only at customer’s risk.

ABOUT BOOKFORUM
Since its first issue in the summer of 1994, Bookforum has been staking out new territory in the world of book reviews, inviting authors to address books and cultural trends with curiosity, critical insight, and a distinctive personality. Contributors have taken on an array of topics, writing essays, columns, and reviews about fiction, history, fashion, feminism, current events, policy, bestsellers, fashion, film, music, pop culture, and personal obsessions.
The magazine’s themed summer issues have displayed a similarly broad range, each assembling a variety of perspectives around topics like crime writing, sex, the role of money in fiction, and the cultural transformations of 1968. Throughout, Bookforum has given voice to smart, original writers as they consider emerging authors, shed new light on well-known works, and take issue with overrated and problematic cultural trends.
“Bookforum is an essential antidote to complacency in the world of writing and publishing—a shot of oxygen directly to the brain.” —Jonathan Lethem
“I’m a Bookforum loyalist-devotee-fan because it feels like being at a party full of smart, quirky people saying provocative, unexpected things about every manner of book and issue. It combines rigor and panache without succumbing to self-seriousness or being a deadly slog to read, leaving me slightly more optimistic about the survival of book folk and literary culture than i might otherwise be.” —Laura Kipnis
“Bookforum is delightful—an energetic, eclectic review that could be a younger, more playful relative of the new york review of books; there is always something fresh and engaging in its pages, on a great variety of subjects.” —Mary Gaitskill
“In Bookforum I trust.” —Lynne Tillman
“Bookforum publishes the most ferocious, electric, intelligent, and demanding criticism in the English language. You cannot read an issue without learning about a new writer you should read. It is one of America’s last great champions of the art of writing.” —Clancy Martin
“Bookforum is a force for good in the literary universe, brilliantly bringing the primary virtues (intelligence, rigor, passion, depth) to bear on contemporary culture. I am always grateful for its reviving presence.” —George Saunders
